Following an eventful weekend, the UFC returns with a huge night in the form of UFC 274. A Lightweight championship bout is set to take place between reigning champion Charles Oliveira and the division's top contender Justin Gaethje. The event is scheduled to take place on May 7, 2022, at Footprint Center in Phoenix, United States. Defending Champion Oliveira is a submission artist and boasts the most finishes in UFC history. Following the loss to Khabib Nurmagomedov via technical submission, Gaethje defeated Michael Chandler at UFC 268 via unanimous decision. It is a bout between two tenured veterans who have fought their way into the top of the 155-pound ranks.
Hailing from Sao Paulo, Brazil, Oliveira is a black belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu. "Do Bronx" means "from the outskirts," a name he chose for himself given his poor and challenging background. He holds an excellent MMA record of 32-8. The latest of his losses came against Paul Felder at UFC 218 back in 2017. He won the vacant UFC lightweight title by knocking out Michael Chandler at UFC 262 and defended the title against another division elite Dustin Poirier at UFC 269.
Fighting out of Colorado United States, Justin Gaethje is an excellent wrestler and arguably the best in the division. As of December last year, 'The Highlight' is ranked first in the UFC Lightweight rankings. Gaethje is hailed by most as the most proficient striker in the division. The American native holds an impressive MMA record of 23-3. All three of his defeats came against the very best in the division, Eddie Alvarez, Dustin Poirier and Khabib Nurmagomedov.
In another scintillating championship bout of the night, reigning women's strawweight champion Rose Namajunas a.k.a 'Thug Rose' puts her belt on the line against the #2 contender in the division Carla Esparza nicknamed 'The Cookie Monster'. Namajunas is a two-time strawweight champion and is currently ranked third in the UFC women's pound-for-pound rankings. 'Thug Rose' holds an MMA record of 11-4. Esparza is a veteran of the sport and was the first UFC strawweight champion. A brown belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, 'The Cookie Monster' holds an MMA record of 18-6 and is currently ranked eighth in UFC women's pound-for-pound rankings.
